A recent study published in theJournal of the American Medical Associationshowed that a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) called celecoxib (Celebrex) can treat acute pain, but the study was controversial. In the study, published in the journalN Engl J Med, researchers found that patients taking celecoxib were also showing an increase in joint pain, as measured by the Rho-Golular index.
The research, published inJ Clin Pain, shows that while it may be effective in treating pain and inflammation, it does not always work. The research suggests that patients taking a combination of NSAIDs should be monitored closely, and they should only be aware of potential side effects if they take a medication that contains both prescription and non-prescription NSAIDs. The researchers were able to demonstrate that celecoxib, the active ingredient in the celecoxib capsules, caused no changes in joint pain or inflammation.
The researchers found that a combination of celecoxib and aspirin could significantly improve pain relief, but not inflammation.
“When we looked at the data we were able to find that the combination of celecoxib and aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), aspirin plus celecoxib, did a better job than aspirin alone,” said study co-author Dr. Michael J. Lehmacher, M. D., Ph. D., of Duke University and one of the authors of the study. “This was a landmark study. But, in light of that, we thought it was a good idea to conduct the study.”
Celecoxib was approved by the FDA in 1997. It was the first NSAID to be approved for pain relief for arthritis patients, but was later withdrawn due to its side effects, including gastrointestinal bleeding. However, the study is still ongoing, and the FDA has issued a public advisory about it. In fact, the FDA has not approved Celebrex for use in arthritis.
“This study shows that a combination of NSAIDs is safe, effective, and can help treat acute pain,” said Dr. Lehmacher.
The researchers looked at data from a total of 2,074 patients in the study. They found celecoxib had no significant effect on pain relief, but patients who took celecoxib had a significantly greater improvement in pain scores when they stopped taking it.
The researchers said the combination of celecoxib and aspirin could significantly improve pain relief, but not inflammation. “NSAID-induced joint pain can be a real concern in patients who are taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or aspirin, and it is important to be aware of these side effects,” said Dr.
The study was conducted by Dr. J. Casey Davis, M. D., a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

Celecoxib is not currently approved for arthritis, and it may also not be approved for the treatment of acute pain. But, the study found that celecoxib had no effect on pain.
“Celecoxib is a safe medication and a potential first-line treatment for patients with acute musculoskeletal pain,” said Dr. Davis. “We are excited to report that our findings show that it can help relieve pain and inflammation in patients who are taking celecoxib.”

Celebrex 100mg Tablet contains the active ingredient Celecoxib. It belongs to the family known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), and specifically a sub-group known as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors. It is used in adults for the relief of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. In conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, excess production of prostaglandins by your body can lead to pain and inflammation. Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver or kidney disease, have inflammatory intestinal conditions, or have heart-related issues such as heart failure, heart disease, or circulation problems. Additionally, if you have had surgeries on leg arteries or have a history of blood circulation problems, this medicine usage should be avoided. Celebrex 100mg Tablet contains lactose. If you are sugar intolerant, consult your doctor before using this product. This medicine is for adults only, it is not for use in children.
Inform your doctor about if you have a history of stomach or intestinal ulcers or bleeding (avoid if currently present), are on acetylsalicylic acid or antiplatelet therapies, use blood clotting or corticosteroid medications, or simultaneously use other non-acetylsalicylic NSAIDs like ibuprofen.
Report your doctor if you have conditions such as smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, compromised heart, liver, or kidney function, fluid retention, dehydration, past severe allergic reactions to medications, ongoing infections, or are over 65 years old. Monitoring may be necessary. Notably, Celebrex 100mg Tablet could mask fever or infection signs. Remember, alcohol combined with NSAIDs may increase gastrointestinal risks.
